Migration to Shashemene: ethnicity, gender and occupation in urban Ethiopia1985Bok (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This book is about migration to Shashemene, a small town in southern Ethiopia, before 1974. In the book, the migration to Shashemene elucidates the mechanisms behind the movement to small African towns experiencing rapid populations increase but having few opportunities for formal employment. A main issue is how the political and economic history of the southern central region of Ethiopia, as well as, the structure of the Ethiopian urban economy in the early 1970's, has influenced migration patterns of people from different ethnic groups coming to Shashemene. The ethnically stratified occupational structure is outlined, and the role of women in urban Ethiopia is discussed. Studies of other urban areas in Ethiopia are interpreted in the light of the findings from Shashemene.

Planning and evaluation in aid organizations1985Bok (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The success (or failure) of aid programmes in developing countries is difficult to measure in terms of results. In fact international cooperation in development programmes seems to have reached few of its objectives. World recessions and wildly fluctuating commodity prices have hit many developing countries hard, while an ecological doomsday looms in the background.

What went wrong with development cooperation through aid? What can be done better? What should the objectives of development programmes be?

These questions imply that we need to study not only the impact of development projects but also initiation, implementation and evaluation processes for aid programmes. Aid organizations need to emphasize the efficiency of these processes if development programmes are to succeed.

This book deals with structures and processes in aid organiztions. It shows how planning and evaluation work in practice in a comparative study of two organizations, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Swedish International Development Authority (SIDA). Several examples of industrial development projects in Tazania are used - some successful, some failures, with others somewhere in between. The aim is to learn from this experience - whether successful or not - and to delineate the potential for more effective development cooperation.

The third world in transition: the case of the peasantry in Botswana1985Bok (Annet vitenskapelig)

The objective of the present work is through the case of Botswana to discuss the creation of poverty in the period of transition from tribal to modern society in the Third World today. This is done by an analysis focusing at the peasantry. The recently renewed fashion of blaming the peasants for lack of improved food production and thus for poverty at local and national levels is questioned.

Pastoral man in the garden of Eden: the Maasai of the Ngorongoro conservation area, Tanzania1985Bok (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The Ngorongoro Highlands and the serengeti Plains in nothern Tanzania are renowed for their abundant wildlife and scenic beauty. Ngorongoro is also the home of some 15,000 semi-nomadic Maasai pastorialists. Together with their herds of domestic stock they have for generations coexisted peacefully with the wildlife in the area.

This book is an account of the pastoral community in Ngorongoro. Against the backdrop of national development policies and the history of wildlife conservation in the area, the book describes resource utilization and living conditions among the Ngorongoro Maasai.
