A first-hand report and analysis of the new book fair drama in Harare 1996 is included in the new expanded edition.

Balancing rocks: environment and development in Zimbabwe1996Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Environment has become a major factor in development, as part of a global awareness on the need to either change or sustain current trends. Balancing Rocks tackles the environment issues affecting Zimbabwe, their consequences and solutions. The book is the first empirical attempt to assess Zimbabwe's environmental linkages to development on a sectoral basis and with the intention of reviewing policy for the future. It is a useful tool for all those interested in a discussion that goes beyond narrow academic or political agendas, and understand that environment and development are fragile "balancing rocks".

Survival on meagre resources: Hadendowa pastoralism in the Red Sea Hills1996Bok (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This is the first comprehensive study of Hadendowa Beja pastoralism in Eastern Sudan. The various chapters deal with the effects of drought and of human activities on the natural environment; the effect on pastoral migration patterns, and socio-cultural changes. The authors argue that the recurrent pastoral disasters cannot be blamed only on the pastoralists, but must be related to wider economic and political contexts, in which the pastoralists are becoming increasingly marginalised.

Challenges to the nation-state in Africa1996Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The challenges facing the nation-state in contemporary Africa are increasingly attracting the attention of scholars interested to understand how the decomposition and recomposition of popular political identities on the continent are affecting the post-colonial unitary project. The studies presented in this volume show that the challenges to the post-colonial nation-state project in Africa have mainly taken ethno-regionalist, religious and separatist forms. These challenges have been shaped by the long drawn-out economic crisis, zero-sum, market-led structural adjustment, and the legacy of decades of political authoritarianism and exclusion that dates from the colonial period. The contributors to this book present different suggestions to promote national unity and a supporting civic identity in Africa.

Burundi - landet med kuppen utan slut1996Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

The aid relationship in Zambia: a conflict scenario1996Bok (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Does aid work? This book examines this issue. But rather than trying to establish how effective aid has been, the focus is shifted towards to one of the key edterminants of effectiveness - the aid relationship. It looks at the relationship between Zambia and its donors and discusses the likely impact of aid in a country where poverty has become rampant and the international debt has reached unmanageable proportions.

A place to live: gender research on housing in Africa1996Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Be it a house or a makeshift, a shared or rented room, or a home of one's own, a place to live is central in surviving strategies of all urban households. In this volume the authors explore the gendered experiences of housing and housing rights in African countries. There are many differences but also many similarities in the pattern of women not having the same access and control over housing as men have. While women often are the bread-winners, they are also the home-makers, in the sense that it is women who put intense efforts in making a place home.

Förvaltning, ledarskap och institutionsutveckling - på Afrikas villkor: en antologi1996Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
