Socioeconomic stress, health and child nutritional status in Zimbabwe at a time of economic structural adjustment: a three-year longitudinal study1998Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This report intervenes in the debate on the implications of structural adjustment for the social sector in Africa. It finds a strong association between structural adjustment implementation and a sharp deterioration both in the household economy and in the health status of the working poor in urban and rural Zimbabwe.

Private sector response to agricultural marketing liberalisation in Zambia: a case study of Eastern Province maize market1998Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This report examines the efficacy of the agricultural sector reforms that have been implemented in Zambia since 1991/92 when the MMD government of Fred Chiluba was elected to office. On the basis of empirical material gathered in the field, the report demonstrates the limitations of the reform and identifies a number of constraints that have hampered the private sector and made the agricultural marketing system remain relatively underdeveloped.

Structural adjustment, agrarian change and rural ethnicity in Nigeria1998Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The period since the early 1980s when the Nigerian economic crisis began in earnest has coincided with an increase in the incidence of ethnic conflicts in the country. Even the rural areas, previously regarded as spheres of ethnic harmony have not been able to escape the spread of violent inter-communal and inter-ethnic clashes. This report represent an attempt to understand the sources of ethnic tension in contemporary Nigeria. In doing so, the relationship between economic decline, structural adjustment and ethnic clashes is explored. The focus is on the problem of rural ethnicity, a much neglected dimension of ethnicity in Nigeria.

Towards a new partnership with Africa: challenges and opportunities1998Konferanseproceedings (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This book is part of a study by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs on future relations between Sweden and Africa. The outcome of this study was a white paper, presented by the Swedish Government to the Swedish Parliament in March 1998 on its African policy, based on a report entitled 'Partnership with Africa'. Listening attentively to African voices was of particular importance in the course of the review process leading to the white paper. In this connection two conferences were organised in which African invitees were the main participants. The first conference was organised by the Nordic Africa Institute in cooperation with the African Development Bank and resulted in the anthology A New Partnership for African Development - Issues and Parameters, published by the Nordic Africa Institute in May 1997.The second conference was held in Saltsjöbaden in June 1997 and this volume brings together a number of the papers which were commissioned to serve as background material to the debate  that took place then. Examples of African reform work in four theme areas are dealt with:

Africa's democratic culture, including gender equality; security and conflict management.

    Africa in the international economy.

Africa's aid dependency and prospects for changed relations between Africa and other countries.

Relations between Sweden and Africa - current situation and future potential, opened by two personal and engaged letters to 'My little brother Sweden from Your big sister Africa- written by Angela L. Ofori-Atta, lecturer at the University of Ghana Medical School.

Structural adjustment and women informal sector traders in Harare, Zimbabwe1998Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This report documents patterns of differentiation within the informal sector amidst the decline in working and living conditions associated with the structural adjustment programme, and shows that in the era of adjustment, the informal sector, far from being a site of accumulation, is a site of bare survival.

From Zaire to the Democratic Republic of the Congo1998Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This paper examines the political and social situation in the DRC since May 1997, together with the prospects for a successful political and social transition. Consistent with the deepest aspirations of the Congolese population, such a transition will succeed if it involves an irreversible development towards multiparty democracy and the full utilisation of the country’s immense resources for economic and social development. In other words, a successful transition is one in which basic freedoms and liberties will be guaranteed through democratic governance and the rule of law, with tangible improvements in living conditions.

    Abstract [sv]

The elusive prince of Denmark: structural adjustment and the crisis of governance in Africa1998Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

There has recently emerged a growing concern among scholars and policy makers to elaborate a connection between structural adjustment and governance in the Third World, due to a desire for market-driven economic reform in the adjusting countries. The governance is presented as the missing link for these economic reforms. This report challenges the intellectual premises of the governance project of the Bretton Woods twins in Africa. It argues that in the way in which it has been articulated, the World Bank/IMF governance reform agenda can hardly be expected to lay an enduring basis for a system of democratic governance in Africa. Nor can it be expected to create a framework for non-repressive economic reforms.

The politics of opposition in contemporary Africa1998Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This book is mainly devoted to a discussion of the broad experiences of the opposition parties that have emerged as a part of the movement towards multi-party politics in Africa. The contributors to the book tackle an interesting mix of issues from a critique of opposition politics in the context of the economic decline in Africa to an assessment of the effors made by the opposition to establish an effective presence under extremely difficult circumstances. The book also draws attention to the many internal organisational/leadership problems that have contributed as much to the weakness of the opposition as the machinations of the ruling parties. Ethnicity, religion and regionalism are identified as crucial factors militating against the opposition. Case studies are drawn from Kenya, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

Haraka, haraka-: look before you leap1998Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

A compilation of nine studies from the Reproductive Health Study Group at the University of Dar es Salaam. They highlight the erosion of customary institutions that regulate procreation and express the meaning of gender and marriage. They show the failure of modern education to prepare the young for gendered adulthood. A central tenet of the work is that without an understanding of the dynamics of local customs and attitudes as well as their significance to the people who hold them, change initiated from without becomes ineffective and unsustainable.

Ethnicity and the state in Eastern Africa1998Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Anathematized and outlawed by African nationalism early in the postcolonial period, ethnicity has now eclipsed nationalism. It has proved by far the most potent force for political mobilization. The studies in this volume provide ample evidence of this potency of ethnicity. The authors focus on ethnicity's relationship to the state and try to account for the twists and turns that mark the history of this relationship.

Diversification and accumulation in rural Tanzania: anthropological perspectives on village economics1998Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This study extends the analysis of local complexity to the sphere of the division of labour. The main argument is that the rural producers tend to diversify into multiple sources of income, and generate innovative strategies of straddling between these incomes sources. The main part of this volume consists of the ethnographic analysis of a case study conducted in Lindi district. It is a thought-provoking and theoretically challenging work which reveals how cultural issues penetrate economic practices and modify the outcome of any economic interventions.

The making of a periphery: economic development and cultural encounters in southern Tanzania1998Konferanseproceedings (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

What makes a periphery? The southeastern corner of Tanzania is officially one of the poorest corners of the world and is always presented as a peripheral area. This volume presents a lively discussion on the making of a periphery. The contributors show the interaction between the perceptions of outsiders, the views of local people, and the actual development efforts. The authors perceive development as a negotiated and contested field. Culture is not considered a factor constraining development but is seen rather as an engine which, due to the plurarlity of local and outsider cultures, sets the parameters for the battle. The volume include chapters on the major local economic sectors, social development, and cultural debates. In each chapter, the making of periphery is addressed from a different perspective.

Institution building and leadership in Africa1998Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This anthology aims at increasing the understanding of current management practices in Africa, and the challenges faced in building institutions. Two main themes run throughout the book: one is the character of African organisations with their strengths and weaknesses, while the other is the experience of close cooperation with an African organisation. Together the authors create a picture of institutional development work in Africa and its enormous complexity.
