Small town Africa: studies in rural-urban interaction1990Konferanseproceedings (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Small towns have often been considered as unimportant and have been largely ignored by policy-makers and researchers. Instead, attention was focussed on the large city or on rural development and agricultural change without consideration of the positive contribution that small towns can make to rural transformation. But for the rural majority of Africa's population it is the small town with which they have the most intense contacts. Case studies are presented from Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Nigeria, Somalia, Sudan, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The rural-urban interface in Africa: expansion and adaptation1992Konferanseproceedings (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This book explores how some of the specific sectors, organisations and actors influence and shape the functioning of small towns in Africa. A number of the contributors of the volume point to the resilience and ingenuity of Africa's rural and urban population and demonstrate how they adapt strategies which enables them to survive and, in some cases, even to thrive. Case studies are drawn from Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Namibia, Nigeria, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. The volume fills a gap for undergraduate and graduate courses in geography, sociology, anthropology, development studies, as well as urban and rural planning.

When the grass is gone: development intervention in African arid lands1991Konferanseproceedings (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This book discusses some of the consequences of development interventions for ordinary people, and some of their environmental concomitants. The contributors all raise new questions of how to redeem the people who live in the arid lands from their present predicament and how to enable them to manage their own future. Many of the insights have been sharpened by ideas well-known to peasants and pastoralists, but seldom discussed among policymakers.

South Africa and global apartheid: continental and international policies and politics2004Konferanseproceedings (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This study covers a variety of political and economic aspects of Africa's and South Africa's relationships to the world. The author considers the context of global apartheid, in terms of international stagnation, uneven development and African marginalisation, and evaluates the South African setting as a telling site of worsening inequality. Where does then the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) stand on the largest economic and political problems? South Africa's other proposed global reforms are also discussed. Finally, the author records an emerging ideology based not on commodification via globalisation but on decommodification and deglobalisation, and the strategies, tactics and alliances required for African and international progress.

    Abstract [en]

In September 1982 a number of researcers and representatives of the Nordic development agencies as well as members of several international organizations were invited to discuss the nature and origin of the "recession" in Sub-Saharan Africa. In preparing the seminar a number of scholars were invited to write background papers.

The country case studies and a paper on strategic issues are presented in this volume. By way of an introduction a presentation is given of the World Bank Report "Accelerated Development in Sub-Saharan Africa - An Agenda for Action", and of the Lagos Plan of Action, adopted by the Organization of African Unity.

    Abstract [en]

This book examines the significance of the association as platforms for transformation of female identities. Women suffer from male domination and socio-cultural norms and values which deprives them of political power in the community, but do the women's associations work to change this situation for the better or do they confirm and support existing power and gender structures? As some authors are Anglophone and other Francophone, the articles are written either in English with a French abstract or vice versa.

Rural water supply and health: the need for a new strategy1982Konferanseproceedings (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

In poor countries there is a linkage between lack of safe water, high levels of infections, and high rates of child mortality. To cope with this world-wide problem, the United Nations has launched The International Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Decade 1981-90 with health as the overriding objective. Water supply close to the homes will also radically reduce the heavy burden on rural women for which water drawing is a household task. In order that the health objective will be attained, people have to use the water provided, keep it clean in the home, and keep the water supply system in operation.

Water supply and sanitation can no longer be seen as merely technical problems, but involve measures to secure operation and maintenance, manpower, administration, health education, and creation of a sence of public ownership.

This book synthesises contributions to and results of the United Nations Seminar on Rural Water Supply held in Uppsala Sweden, in October 1980.

Beyond territory and scarcity: exploring conflicts over natural resource management2005Konferanseproceedings (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The attainment of sound and sustainable environmental management is one of humanity's greatest challenges this century, particularly in Africa, which is still heavily dependent on the exploitation of natural and agricultural resources and is faced with rapid population growth. Yet, this challenge should not be reduced to Malthusian parameters and the simple question of population growth and failing resources. In this volume, ten anthropologists and geographers critically address traditionalMalthusian discourses in essays that attempt to move "beyond territory andscarcity" by:- Exploring alternatives to the strong natural determinism that reduces natural resource management to questions of territory and scarcity.- Presenting material and methodologies that explore the different contexts in which social and cultural values intervene, and discovering more than 'rational choice' in the agency of individuals.- Examining the relevance of the different conceptions of territory for the ways in which people manage, or attempt to manage, natural resources.- Placing their research within the framework of the developing discussion on policy and politics in natural resource management.

The studies are drawn from a range of sub-Saharan African countries: Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Lesotho, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, and Sudan.

Supporting African peace operations2012Konferanseproceedings (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The Nordic Africa Institute, the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation and the Norwegian Institute for International Affairs hosted a seminar in Uppsala, Sweden, on 15 and 16 December 2011, that brought together AU, EU and UN officials closely involved in peace operations in Africa. The seminar’s purpose was to allow participants to compare their experiences of the different support models that have been used to date in Sudan and Somalia. International support for African peace operations provides opportunities but also poses challenges. This report examines four of these challenges in some detail: the AU Commission’s limited capacity to plan and manage peace operations; insufficient political engagement by African member states with AU peace operations; the short-termism and self-interest of some of the AU’s partners; and the need for UN Security Council permanent members to value and ensure a shared AU-UN strategic vision. The report also includes policy recommendations for resolving these challenges.

The IMF and the World Bank in Africa: conditionality, impact and alternatives1987Konferanseproceedings (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Most Sub-Saharan African countries have, during the 1980s, implemented a program of structural adjustment in conjunction with the IMF and the World Bank. These international institutions have thus had a decisive role in the formulation of economic policies in these countries.

In early 1987, a conference on the "IMF and the World Bank in Africa" was arranged by the Scandinavian Institute of African Studies in Uppsala. In the conference the character of the conditionality requirements attached to these programs were investigated by a group of international experts and their impacts were analysed on a macro-level and through specific studies of Nigeria, the Sudan, Tanzania, Zambia, Mozambique, South Africa, the Ivory Coast and India for comparative purposes. The conference also aimed at suggesting alternative and improved conditionality in the African context.

    Abstract [en]

Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, Tanzania, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe provide examples in this book of the problems and progress of the cooperative movement in Africa. The studies presented here were the major contributions to a seminar for African and European scholars specializing in examining the development of cooperatives.

Certain themes reoccur: the relationships between the cooperatives and the state, the influence of the national economy on the local cooperatives, the pros and cons of the producer cooperatives. The tone is now very much against direct state control. Other themes are new: the role of women in cooperatives, a cautious view of external assistance to central bodies, and the need for self-help groups.

This monograph presents a well-informed overview and analysis of political transitions, democratic struggles and elections in West Africa. It explores the ways in which various authoritarian regimes across the sub-region have tried to subvert democracy and how the citizens of various countries have struggled against dictatorship and impunity, to achieve the return to democratic rule. Drawing on insights from the Ghanaian model of free and fair elections, Niger's difficult, but successful transtion to democracy, elections in post-conflict Sierra Leone and Liberia, and the struggles for democracy in Nigeria, Jibrin Ibrahim proposes concrete strategies that will empower the people of West Africa to make political choices which will advance and secure their individual and collective socio-economic and democratic rights.

Towards a new partnership with Africa: challenges and opportunities1998Konferanseproceedings (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This book is part of a study by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs on future relations between Sweden and Africa. The outcome of this study was a white paper, presented by the Swedish Government to the Swedish Parliament in March 1998 on its African policy, based on a report entitled 'Partnership with Africa'. Listening attentively to African voices was of particular importance in the course of the review process leading to the white paper. In this connection two conferences were organised in which African invitees were the main participants. The first conference was organised by the Nordic Africa Institute in cooperation with the African Development Bank and resulted in the anthology A New Partnership for African Development - Issues and Parameters, published by the Nordic Africa Institute in May 1997.The second conference was held in Saltsjöbaden in June 1997 and this volume brings together a number of the papers which were commissioned to serve as background material to the debate  that took place then. Examples of African reform work in four theme areas are dealt with:

Africa's democratic culture, including gender equality; security and conflict management.

    Africa in the international economy.

Africa's aid dependency and prospects for changed relations between Africa and other countries.

Relations between Sweden and Africa - current situation and future potential, opened by two personal and engaged letters to 'My little brother Sweden from Your big sister Africa- written by Angela L. Ofori-Atta, lecturer at the University of Ghana Medical School.

    Abstract [en]

Adaptive strategies cannot be fully understood on the basis of environmental constraints alone. The essays presented in this book confirm this and provide material showing how environmental and socio-political processes interact in the making of adaption.

The essays eludiate how manifestations of adaptability problems differ from region to region. such variations depend on the natural environment as well as the particular histories of development, socio-economic characteristics and the nature of the state.

This collection of essays try to provide som answers to the problems emanating from different types of variation, and how they affect processes of adaption and change in African arid land.

A Consultative Workshop on "Regional Integration in Africa" was organised by and at the Nordic Africa Institute on March 8 and 9, 2001. The contributions compiled in this volume were related to this policy oriented but academic endeavour. They identify and review current issues of regionalism and regional integration within the era of globalisation in the African context. Their approaches present different theoretical and regional perspectives which provide new insights, challenge existing concepts and perceptions and contribute to an enriched debate.

    Abstract [en]

This book discusses why refugees flee, how and whether they become integrated, the relations between development assistance and refugee assistance, and the legal status of the refugees. The concept of 'people's rights' is discussed, and the rights to development with special reference to the refugees.
