Based on a recent study that came out in May 2025, this paper summarizes the forms of agency, social media, and transnational e-commerce between Dakar and Istanbul, as well as the people involved, including migrants, the GPs (Gratis Passengers). The latter are freight “shippers” or “air mail carriers,” who use their baggage allowance to transport diverse packages between Istanbul and Dakar. This contribution highlights active transnational trade and a circular, yet strategic, migration that is not very visible. The interviews focused primarily on the back-and-forth of traders between Dakar and Istanbul, the GPs (mostly Senegalese), and other Senegalese businessmen. Using the power of social media such as WhatsApp, TikTok, and Facebook, they regularly trade with Turkey while residing in Senegal. Some of them have never left Senegal.
